What is PCOD [Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease]
The very name itself indicating that Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease is a condition in which there are single to many small cysts in the either of ovaries or in some cases it can be affected both the ovaries. PCOD usually causes irregular behaviour of menstrual cycles, Infertility & in some obese people it can predispose to Type 2 Diabetes too.
Where the PCOD is associated with other clinical conditions like Hypothyroidism, Obesity then the condition is called as Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome [PCOS]
Causes:
PCOD is usually due to combination of both Environmental & Genetic factors
Family history of someone with the condition
Hypothyroidism

Symptoms of PCOD:
Menstrual disorders: PCOD often leads to Oligomenorrhea (few menstrual periods) or Amenorrhea (no menstrual periods), but other types of menstrual disorders may also occur.
Infertility due to chronic anovulation (Fails to produce Ovum). [But in some people periodical release of ovum lead to late pregnancy].
High levels of masculinizing hormones [Male Hormones]: leads to acne and hirsutism (male pattern of hair growth), but in some it may cause to hypermenorrhea (heavy and prolonged menstrual flow), androgenic alopecia (increase hair thinning or diffuse hair loss), or other symptoms
Metabolic syndrome. This appears as a tendency towards central obesity and other symptoms. In some it may be associated with insulin resistance leads to type 2 Diabetes.

Diagnosis:
Ultrasonography – Will give the clear information like extent of ovary involved, size of cysts...
Laproscopy Examination.
Hormone levels in Blood : Elevation of Androgens

Associated Conditions:
In some high risk group like Obesity, Family history of Diabetes, history of gestational diabetes GTT [Glucose Tolerance Test] is recommended. Altered GTT indicates Insulin resistance & it may be present in both normal weight as well as overweight individuals though its occurrence high in latter group. Approximately 65% people will become true diabetics at some time of their life.
